Trafficking of children in the Indian subcontinent

Trafficking of children in the Indian subcontinent

Trafficking of children in the Indian subcontinent is nothing new. Children from Nepal, Bangladesh, Srilanka, India and Pakistan have been trafficked for a long time by agents of different interested people. One may not know the exact number of children trafficked in a year. There are discernible objective conditions in this subcontinent because of which trafficking of children is still possible. India is country where more than 12 million children have been sweating in hazardous occupations...Obviously most of the children are from the poor families. This article is to describe the reasons behind such a grave violation of children’s right.
Countries of this subcontinent are still in the stage of development. It is better to state that this is a vast region noticeably populated by the poorer people. A new member in a poor family is regarded as an asset. It is expected that his/her both hands will work one day and earn for themselves and for the whole family. The extreme poverty does not allow the hapless parents to take care of their children. It is a fact that they cannot satisfy their minimum need. In a family of five or more the seniors cannot supply bread and cotton.

The children, therefore, are to explore means so that they may meet up the necessities of life. It is a cruel joke and painful one. They begin to learn the art of survival at the dawn of life only. 15 million children, only in India, are engaged in hazardous occupations. India has been the center for the largest number of child laborers in the globe. Children of the poorer families of Nepal join the circuses as child artists instead of joining a school. The utter poverty has thus allowed child trafficking easier in this part of the world.

In Indian society there is visible discrimination on the ground of wealth, religion, caste, creed, language and sex. The mainstream section of the society has always been favored whereas the weaker part is has remained deprived of the opportunities. Even one may find that a male child is favored in practice against a female child. In the political arena reservation of the weaker communities has been highly trumpeted. But it is clear to everyone that the aim is always to secure the votes in the elections. Hence planning with short sighted vision may be experienced anywhere in the subcontinent. This is a huge fissure through which children trafficking have got favorable condition.

Plight of these children is horrible. Girls who have been trafficked to the brothels have left their parents at minor age. Sexual exploitation in the sweat-shops mostly under cover is a dread reality. On the other hand, kids have been targeted for sexual abuse more than ever in all the countries of this region. In most of the cases the parents have no perception on education. They do not even know and at times do not bother to know identity of the agents who take away their children for jobs. Children are taken away in the name of domestic services. Sometimes this is true. Parents are paid a little money in return for some months. When the agents do no more appear and parents cannot trace their children the fate of the siblings become clear. There are instances of sale of children and generally people are in the dark as the total operation happens in the hide.

Protection for the children has been an immediate must in modern India and in the countries neighboring India. Persons at the political thrones have little time to spare for these children. Children day is celebrated to show the smiling faces of the haves of the society. Yes, there are responsible non-governmental organizations to render services for these hapless living beings. But people’s serious participation to save the children is the need of the hour and people from Bangladesh to Pakistan and from Nepal to Srilanka are not prepared to respond even now.

Hapless child artists in the Indian operas

Hapless child artists in the Indian operas

Yatra is a form of opera. Yatra is a form of performing art in which drama and dance are utilized adequately. There are many Yatra troupes in the states of West Bengal and Orissa. People and people mainly living in the villages find element of entertainment by these village-based performances round the year save the monsoon months. Children of the poor families are hired for the troupes if they have a little ability to dance and imitate. Still these troupes are centers of agonizing darkness.

Boys and girls of the poorer section of the society are recruited by the owners of the troupes and they are to undergo regular rehearsals. When they are seen performing on the stages the spectators appear to be spell bound. But they do not know the hardship of those children who laugh and cry and dance and utter the set dialogues on the stages every night.

Children enter this world of rural glamor not with their own demand and they enter to occupy the sage even before attaining puberty. They are naturally deprived of education. Most of them do not even know what a school is and many of them are hapless drop outs. They, however, learn to read the scripts and that is the end of their education.

They seem to have worn costly and glittering attires on the stage and effect of lighting turns them attractive. But in real life they do not have the required shirts or frocks. What they wear during the day is torn and not clean. They are not given sufficient food. They get very frugal meal and very little protein. Actually they eat less than what they need. If a boy or a girl asks a little more he or she is treated with sticks and slaps.

These child artists are not attended if they are ill. And they are generally ill and tuberculosis is the common destination for most of them. They are to take rest on the dirty floor and they are not allowed to take necessary rest. Again, they are punished in different forms on any plea. They are regularly beaten and tortured by the owners and managers of the troupes.

Boys are regular victims of sexual abuse in the hands of the senior members and managers. There is some worst kind of homosexuals in every troupe. Plight of the girls are much pathetic. They are raped from the early part of their life and they suffer most.

The funniest thing is that these kids are not paid. Some of them are hired on the condition that they will be given food and shelter. Parents of a few are assured that they will get some money every month. But this assurance is not always honored.
It is not that the wretched state of affair inside the world of Yatra is unknown to the privileged world. These unfortunate children are not counted as human beings. Naturally nobody questions if human rights are violated or not. In India political parties count if the issue has any relation with the election future. Hence these children are left to be perpetually persecuted. India is one of the signatories of International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yes, it is true. Yes, still the spectacle is unbearably gloomy.

Missing your child? What is to be done?

Missing your child? What is to be done?

One of the shocking events of my teenage days refers to a missing incident of one of my friends. He was gamesome and cute in appearance even at 13. I can recollect the awe-struck countenances of his parents and relatives. He returned after a week and the police department could not bag any credit for his coming back. He returned alone. He was totally exhausted. He was in a state of trauma and was taken to the psycho-counselor immediately. He was sexually abused.
You may find images of the missing children in the newspapers. You may find crying appeal of the parents addressed to their children in the newspapers. But people in general seem to be least concerned. The nightmarish experiences of the parents and relatives of the missing children are not generally shared by the greater part of the society.
In the USA 800000 children are reported missing in every year and more than 2000 every day. In India the figure is utterly terrifying. It is more than 1000000 in a year. This is to mean that in every second at least 30 children are missing. A great number of the missing kids are not reported and registered. Thousands of children are reported missing in our world and most of them are not traced out ever.
Many of them leave their home when they are persecuted in the family and when they do not feel touch of love. Feuding parents sometimes find their children missing. Many children hail from very poor family and they do not even get food or shelter. They are to ignore the family bondage for survival only. A good number of kids are kidnapped by notorious people who demands huge ransom or enslave the little souls or abuse them sexually or even slaughter them cruelly.
Accounts of missing children are commonly horrible. Still these accounts show us how little we love our kids. But one should not sit idly when it is learned that a child is missing. There is always a chance to a kid’s safe recovery. In such a situation it is a race against time. Time is very important. With the passage of time the chance for recovery becomes less. Hence one must be immediately active to begin the search. At the same time all the relatives of the locality and of the distant places must be intimated.
Photograph of the child is urgently needed. Photograph of the recent time will do well. Multiple copies of the photograph are required. It is better to have photographs of the child in different poses.
It is highly important to contact the police and register a diary. The police must be informed of all the features of the child and addresses of all his relatives and friends. This must be done without any delay. The police will find it difficult to trace out the child if a few hours are allowed to pass meanwhile.
Media must be contacted simultaneously. Photographs and other details of the missing child must be given to the local and national newspapers and to the television channels. There are many websites and their services must be sought. There are a few organizations sincerely working for the benefit of the children and specially the missing children. They have precious experiences and they must be contacted.
And in order to materialize a child’s safe recovery one must not lose heart. One must contact the police station centers of media several times. The authority may become impatient and may feel such approach disgusting. Still what else can be expected from the concerned parents in such a situation?
